background / biography
Erie's newest blues act is nothing like any blues band you've heard before. They blend blues roots lyrics with a modern guitar sound. Songs about love lost, murder, life on the run and the struggle for redemption will make you feel like the crossroads are just outside of the venue.
Hard Luck Story started with guitarist/vocalist Jon Nolan. Simply stated, Nolan lives guitar. After getting his performance degree in guitar, he has played all over the United States. A month for Jon Nolan my include dates playing Irish music with the Mulligans, metal with Who Bleeds First, solo jazz and classical in various small bars, and eve accompanying a wedding or two. When he's not playing guitar, he's teaching guitar at the (appropriately titled) Nolan School of Music in Erie, PA.
"I always wanted to do a blues band, but blues would have to wait until the time was right," says Nolan. "Eventually I had enough time on my hands to get a heavy blues band going. Also, the best guys for the job were available. I contacted a bass player and a drummer and gave them my sales pitch: Let's do a blues band that's dangerous! I read that Sabbath was a blues band before they were Sabbath. What would they've sounded like?" This band isn't going to play a song the same way twice. The sound is blues played loud and hard, digging out more blood and sweat each time. After only a few gigs, word got out and the boys were able to quickly fund a six song EP.
Hard Luck Story has gone beyond that original idea incorporating rockabilly, slide guitar, and modern rock sounds into their blues. To keep things connected to their older crowd, you may hear some Hendrix or the Doors; younger audiences get moving when they hear Social Distortion and White Stripes-style blues. The intense pounding of hard hitting drummer Chris Nagg makes this the most intense blues rhythm section around, letting Nolan put his miles of experience all over the solos.
