Please visit RockErie.com to nominate yourself and/or your band. Nominations begin May 20, 2010 at 9 a.m. on RockErie.com and will end on June 24th, 2010. Based on feedback we have received from Erie’s music community, this year’s voting process has changed. A panel of judges made up from various musical backgrounds will vote along with the usual public voting that will determine this year’s winners. We also have a few changes/surprises that should make the show a little more energetic and entertaining!

If you have any questions about this year’s event, please email Laurie at lthompson@goerie.com or Steve at spuskar@goerie.com.

Please plan to attend the Rock Erie Music Awards event on Sunday, September 26 at the Bayfront Convention Center to honor winners – you may be among them!

Attention Musicians:

The Library Bar and Grill
203 North Center Street Corry

Needs You! The Library starts its second year of Open Mic Night Thursday April 1, 2010.

The plan has changed to encourage more players to get up and perform. We are not going to use a "house band" as we did last year.

Each performer will receive one free drink per night. Players will sign up for a one half-hour set when they arrive at the Library on Open Mic Night. Play times will be on a first come first serve basis. Each set will be 30 minutes long, so avoid using a lot of equipment and be ready to play as soon as your set starts.

The acoustics are great and we have an excellent PA system.

We have upgraded to the latest version of Jamroom. It may look the same but we are working on creating a skin to match the RockErie main site. With the newer jamroom, you may see that your stats have changed...some may be dramatic. We sent a message to Jamroom and this was the response:

"The stats showing now should be correct - there were actually issues with the stats in several of the 3.x [Jamroom] releases, so the values you see now should be the correct values, as the upgrade does a recount on all of the counters and adds them up correctly. "

Sorry for the trouble everyone! If you have any more questions or comments about your page, call me at 814-878-2234 or email us at info@rockerie.com. Thanks everyone and keep the music scene in Erie alive

We have some important news regarding RockErie and RockErie Jamroom…

Jamroom will be down for us due to upgrades! Finally right? We shouldn’t be living in 1994 so we are upgrading the site so it is up to date. Please be patient with this upgrade in how it may take some time to getting familiar with it. With this upgrade, it should make your lives (and ours) a lot easier. Music uploading/converting seemed to be our biggest concern and we should not have that problem once the upgrading has been complete. This upgrade should happen within the next 24-48 hours.

As for RockErie, you are all aware that Jeff Biletnikoff is no longer with us. You might be wondering who to contact now in regards to RockErie and other questioning. Well we have an answer for you. Steve Puskar (pronounced Push-car) is your contact for RockErie with any questions/concerns about the site and the RockErie Music Awards. Office phone is 878-2234 and you can still email us at info@rockerie.com with your questions.

Thanks everyone and rock on-

One of my colleagues put it best. "You're going to write ANOTHER email that says you're leaving?"

As strange/sad as it is, I am.

It's been a great run since 2006 with each of you but I've accepted a position at Citadel Broadcasting in Erie (Classy 100, Z102, Country 98, AM 1260) to sell and do special projects.

This is a good opportunity for me but its been a bittersweet process. I've been at the Erie Times-News since January of 2000 and done a lot of projects. One of my biggest/favorite projects has been RockErie.com and by extension, the Rock Erie Music Awards.

Thank you SO MUCH for being so accepting of a guy that was, for all intents and purposes, an outsider to the Erie Music Scene. I gotta tell you that when I took over RockErie.com in 2006, I felt like I was the biggest pretender on the face of the planet.

In many ways I was. I didn't know a damn thing about the scene or its players.

Thank God you were both accepting of me and patient with me. I know I bloodied my nose a lot as I learned (still do to this day---lol) but I feel that we were able to do some unprecedented things together.

RockErie.com will be in the capable hands of Andrew, Ben and Steve for day to day stuff and the Rock Erie Music Awards is NOT going away.

Let me repeat that, the Rock Erie Music Awards is NOT going away.

Both staffs at CyberInk and The Erie Times-News are completely committed to making year 4 bigger and better than ever. My colleagues Laurie Thompson and Lisa Shade already held a wrap meeting of this year's event in preparation for next year and we are still 11.5 months out.

Again, THANK YOU for everything you've done for me over these last 3 years and you can bet you'll see me out there SUPPORTING THE SCENE.

PS, if you have any questions/concerns, your main contact for RockErie.com is now

To clear something up and to announce something............

VOTING
Internet Explorer DOES work. Its just slow, frustrating and sometimes locks the voting site. If you or your fans do not want blood pressure medication, we suggest Mozilla Firefox. I do not know how many ways I can say I am sorry about these issues but I want you to know that I am. I do not wish to anger anyone or make things hard. This is just one of those tech issues that we ran into because we put more media (songs and videos) into the process. Internet Explorer just is not built to handle it apparently.

If you want Firefox, its free at
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox

SONG OF THE YEAR
On a happier note, song of the year is launched

We have 35 local songs and 4 of these artists will be picked to play LIVE at the Rock Erie Music Awards on Sept. 27th, 2009. I am very happy with the level of participation and we hope to expand on this. We will be running ads pointing people at the Song of the Year page in early September. Its our way of supporting the scene and exposing Erie, PA to local and original music

Again.....SORRY about the voting trouble and I hope you have a great weekend!

We are in the process of providing (we hope) some compilation CDs with each paid ticket to this years RockErie Music Awards (yes, the show will have a charge to it this year---not much though----probably under 5 bucks a ticket).

The CD would include tracks from local artists and we would ask each band that wants to put a track on this CD to pay a nominal fee of like 30 or 40 dollars to participate so that we can cover the cost of producing the CDs

But...we need you to participate to make this happen!

It would be so cool to give every ticket holder a CD with local music on it that they could keep forever!

Let me know via jbilet@goerie.com if:

Fans Having Trouble Voting In The RockErie Music Awards?

Hey all,

I have been getting a lot of complaints (justified) about the voting process this year. No good deed goes unpunished in that we tried to embed a ton of media in the voting process (as you know) with videos, mp3s, etc

Well....all that extra stuff is confusing internet explorer which is why if you use that browser, the voting is blowing up. I am VERY SORRY about any problems this has caused you or your fans but we just cannot figure out a way around that at the moment.

We suggest you direct your fans to download another browser (it does not take long and is free).

The voting works in Mozilla Firefox.

Your fans can go here: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox

Again, SORRY about all of the problems. Your fans still have lots of time to vote for you. Voting does not close until August 29th.

We are working on the internet explorer issue but its looking more and more that we will have to deal with this next year.

If you have questions, please hit up Andrew (akochirka@goerie.com) or Steve (spuskar@goerie.com) as Ben will be on vacation

I hope this helps.

Thanks

A Word About Voting

Hey all...sorry about all the issues with voting. We use a 3rd party for this (to make things more secure) and the cool flash stuff we've put in hasn't played nice with their system in Internet Explorer.

Not making an excuse.....just wanted to let you know what the deal is.

We think we have the voting issues worked out but if you have fans that use Mozilla Firefox as their browser, that is the safest alternative.

However, we do believe the internet explorer issues are behind us.

On another front, it is CONFIRMED! We will feature 4 song of the year performances at this years awards show and keep checking for a page going up to feature all the entrants.

We have GREAT original music being produced in the scene and I could not be happier with how things are going

As always if you have issues please contact Ben Smith at bsmith@goerie.com or 814-878-2235 if you or your fans still have voting issues

THANKS for your patience and SORRY that it has been a PAIN for you so far

That is the date to get your entries in by!

Reminders:

Individual and Band Awards can be entered by filling out the form at www.rockeriemusicawards.com. NO press kit is required now. Its easy to fill out the form too but you will need one for each person that wants to win an award. For example, if you have a 4 piece band with drums, singer, guitar and bass and everyone wants to enter then a form will have to be filled out 5x. One for the band and one each for the instruments/vocals.

To enter for Song/Album of the year, mail your CD that was produced between Jan 1, 2008 (yes, 200 and July 6, 2009 and highlight the track you want as song of the year.
IMPORTANT TECH INFORMATION

Please forgive the pun but when I last ran RockErie.com from Fall 2006 through Summer 2008, I was a ONE MAN band

(sorry......had to do it! LOL)

All kidding aside, though, there is an entire team behind me now because honestly, I am out of the office a ton selling.

I think some of you have been frustrated in that it takes me a few days or more to get back to you but its the nature of the selling beast.

At any rate, if you have any tech questions, your RockErie page does not work, you cannot get into the Rock Erie Music Awards site, the embed code does not work, you want to know how to fill out the form, you want information on how to enter, etc, etc, please contact:

Ben Smith
bsmith@goerie.com
814-878-2235

Ben is the primary tech guy on RockErie and the advantage for you is that unlike me he is in the office most of the time AND he can get back to you within a day or two---usually the same day!

If there is a question that Ben cannot answer, he will involve me but you will find out that he will be able to help you 99.9 percent of the time.

Thanks in advance for reading this and understanding

BIG NEWS

Its not reflected on the site yet (www.rockeriemusicawards.com) but let me be the FIRST TO TELL YOU that we have extended the entry deadline to July 6th.

Voting is now July 13th through August 29th

There is NO reason why you shouldnt do the awards this year.

Listen, I have heard from the scene since I have been back

"Its just a popularity contest"
"Not winning hurts my band"
"Its too disappointing to lose"
"The categories are weighted badly"

Etc....etc

Are you forgetting why we started all this? Hey...do not get me wrong...I DO NOT like losing anymore than the next person but the point of the event is not who wins and loses.

I wish we did not have the competition aspect sometimes but in 3 years I have not been able to figure out a way around that.

The bottom line is we are shining a MASSIVE SPOTLIGHT on the scene for months upon months.

I can bet that in this 3 years we have:

*Gained new fans for participating bands and musicians

*Given people in this community the idea that our music scene is ALIVE and WELL and its FUN to see local musicians do their thing.

*Taken people that might not have otherwise seen live, local music and turned them into folks that
come to see you play

Have we gotten the whole market? No! We have only just begun. Rome was not built in a day! We have to continually remind people that we exist and the RockErie Music Awards is our best vehicle to do that.

Sorry if I seem as if I am venting but when I hear things that seem to focus just on the competition aspects of the awards show while forgetting that the overarching point of this show is to market, promote and glorify the Erie Music Scene, I get a little irritated.

So, get your entries in. Ultimately we only hurt ourselves when we fail to support something that is there to help out the entire music scene

Thanks for reading

Werent we just under a mound of snow? Im still thawing out and were about 3 weeks away from July 4th and then summer is on the down slide again.

Ok..that was a depressing thought.

Even more depressing to me is if we don't get FULL participation in this years RockErie Music Awards.

We have been meeting regularly since February and believe me, this show is going to be bigger and better than ever.

Beyond that, its just good to be involved because its a CELEBRATION of LOCAL music

So, help us, help you (bet you didn't miss THAT statement)

But seriously......the Erie Music scene is OURS and if we dont band together and get people to forget about the latest DVD for one night so they can check out some LIVE music then we are shortchanging ourselves!

SO GET YOUR STUFF IN because win, lose or draw EVERY band and EVERY musician that participates, wins!

Why?

Because we shine a HUGE light on the whole scene all summer long with MASSIVE amounts of advertising that highlights YOUR RockErie pages and ultimately YOUR music!

Dont miss your chance to get noticed!

If you just get one more fan from the whole process, it was worth it (you should get much more than ONE more fan though)

And remember, its free for you to be a part of the contest, so why wouldnt you do it?

And....I'll keep bugging you...................

2009 RockErie Music Awards/Jeff Biletnikoff is Back

What a long, strange trip its been but I am pleased to announce the RockErie Music Awards are back and ready for nominations for YEAR THREE. We have some changes this year so please read the following information carefully.

#1: We have altered some categories and added some. See the list below. You will submit all your stuff beginning on June 1st and you only have until June 22nd so get ready! ITS GOING TO BE MUCH EASIER THIS YEAR. Again, visit www.rockeriemusicawards.com on June 1 or later for details but you will not have to get your press kits in up front--its as simple as filling out an online form. BUT WE ARE GOING TO BE MORE STRINGENT ABOUT HAVING FILLED OUT ROCKERIE PAGES. It benefits both RockErie and YOU when you have your RockErie pages filled out with as much as possible. Please put as much as you can on them!

#2A: We are adding a SONG OF THE YEAR in addition to our ALBUM OF THE YEAR category this year. Get your original material ready! The songs up for consideration will be featured all summer long in our radio player on the NEW RockErie.com (new RockErie.com? See item 6 below for details). Songs/Albums must have been recorded between 1/1/08 and 6/22/09. You will get instructions on how to submit for both song and album of the year when the awards submission phase launches on 6/1 (www.rockeriemusicawards.com) but I can give you a sneak preview in that you will be mailing your CDs to Dave Richards, Song/Album of the Year, 205 West 12th, Erie, PA 16534

#3 Date of the RockErie Music Awards? Changed. End of summer is too tough. Sunday, 9/27 is the new date. Still at the Bayfront Convention Center and we are working on surprises for you. We are going to make this show bigger and better. If you thought the 2008 show was great, just wait for this one!

#4 Some dates to remember. Submissions start on Monday, 6/1 and end on Monday 6/22. Musicians are invited to come to Sherlocks on Wednesday, 6/3 at 8p if you have questions about this years awards. We will be there to answer questions and anything else you want to talk about. Voting will officially launch on 6/29 and end on 8/29.

#5 On a personal note, its GOOD TO BE BACK. I have missed the scene and everyone in it. I have worked behind the scenes assisting Steve, Andrew and Ben where I could but it has not been the same. As painful as it was to leave RockErie its ultimately turned out to be a good thing for me because I have grown within the company. Now instead of being known as the RockErie guy, I am now starting to be known as the RockErie guy that can also sell. The more you can do in 2009, the better!

#6: Oh...RockErie is getting a facelift. You are the first to see what the new site will look like: http://redesign.rockerie.com .

#7: Finally, we are adding a HALL OF FAME to the process to salute those that are multiple winners. Do we have all the details on it yet? No...we are still working it out but we think as the show goes on it will be important to honor those that show excellence year over year.

Well, if you have any questions please call me at 878-1969 or hit me up at jbilet@goerie.com. PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM OUT OF THE OFFICE UNTIL TUESDAY AND MAY BE SO CRAZY BUSY THAT DAY THAT I MAY NOT GET A CHANCE TO ANSWER YOU UNTIL WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY

Just wanted to tell you that up front!

I'm not big on speeches so I'll just say that I've enjoyed my time with RockErie.com since taking it over in May, 2006.

I've met a lot of good friends and nice people in this music scene. We have the best music scene in the world and I was happy to be a part of it.

Effective immediately I am no longer a part of RockErie.com. The company has decided to utilize me in a different direction and make me a sales account rep on the online side.

It's a good opportunity for me to grow within the organization so it's a positive move.

RockErie. com and Celebrate Erie '08 have teamed up to bring EXCITING things to local artists this year.

First of all, Celebrate Erie '08 was so excited to have local artists last year that you are now going to get PAID for your efforts. This is a definite and you read right.

ARTISTS WILL GET PAID for their time at Celebrate Erie this year on the LOCAL stage.

Soon, we will book the local stage with winners from last year's RockErie Music Awards and we respectfully ask for YOUR HELP in offsetting some costs for Celebrate Erie!

All we ask is that you and your fans attend a special fundraiser at Jr's Last Laugh Comedy Club and Restaurant on Wednesday, 5/21/08 (doors open at 5, event starts at 6:30).

THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO EVERYONE!!!!

Tickets are only $12.88

88 and half goes to CAFE' (Culture, Arts, Festivals, and Events of Erie, the 501(c)(3) non-profit company that runs Celebrate Erie)

Comics include the VERY FUNNY Brad Zimmerman and Buzz Nutley plus an appearance by me as MC.

You'll learn quickly why as producer of the RockErie Music Awards '07 I hired a pro comic.

It's worth the 12 bucks just to see me bomb on stage.

I ask this as a personal favor to all local musicians and their fans. PLEASE attend this special night.

Again, the ticket price is ONLY $12.88 and 1/2 goes into SUPPORTING THE SCENE.

We are planning on no less than 12 bands on the local stage, with 45 minute sets and EVERYONE gets paid.

That is unprecedented at Celebrate Erie for that many LOCAL bands to get paid (A SPECIAL thank YOU to Mayor Sinnott and the entire Celebrate Erie '08 committee)

It wouldn't be possible without Celebrate Erie stepping up to make a MAJOR committment to you.

Let's try and give something back to them by coming to the event and encouraging EVERYONE we know to attend.

You can get details at http://rockeriemusicawards. com/fundraiser or call Jr's Last Laugh Comedy Club & Restaurant at 461-0911

Together we can SUPPORT those that are SUPPORTING the scene!

Thanks in advance for your time and cooperation.

Know Any Good Bartenders?

Our friends at Showcase are running a Bartender's Challenge Contest and they need help getting the word out to bartenders that the contest is in existence.

We're giving out awards in multiple bartender categories, not unlike the RockErie Music Awards, and since a lot of us know a lot of good and deserving bartenders, I thought I would ask you to help let them know about it because they have to apply.

They can get details at www.goerie.com/showcase

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP.

RockErie Music Awards FAQ's

I've been getting a lot of questions via email regarding the RockErie Music Awards 2008 and wanted to provide answers to some of them. If I haven't answered them all please contact me directly at info@rockerie.com or 814-878-1969. The object of the RockErie Music Awards is to support the scene and let people know about all the great music you're producing.

Together we can get more people to more shows!!!!

RockErie Music Awards FAQ's.

1. February 29th deadline? Why so early?

Last year's show was crazy at the end. We spent so much time chasing people down for photos and songs that we don't feel like we maximized our promotional power. By getting everything in at the end of February for an August show we will have more time to concentrate on the marketing aspects of the show instead of "what photos are we missing?"

2. I'm confused. You want a press kit for bands and one for individuals? You want me to give you a photo and a song if I'm applying as an individual plus you want one for my band as well? I have to have pages on RockErie as well? How many pages do I need? What do I need on them?

This is a sticking point for a lot of people. They think they have to come up with an elaborate press kit for themselves and their band.

Here's the deal. If you went to the awards show last year you'll remember that we put nominees photos up on the big screens and the house band played artist's songs.

All we're looking for is a photo for the screens (and other marketing avenues such as the newspaper) and a song that the house band can imitate.

Also, the song will be attached to the voting page when we launch it for the public so they can play your music before they vote.

So, don't go crazy doing this stuff.

Say your band has a bassist, guitar player, singer and drummer and you're all applying.

The band would fill out a band application and the bassist, guitarist, singer and drummer would all apply as individuals.

Could you all use the same song? Sure. Could all of you use the same RockErie page that the band has? Sure.

Would it be better if each member had their own RockErie page and each had a unique song that showcases them? Yeah...but its not required.

I will tell you that the more you do the better but also I know you all have a lot going on so I don't want applying to the RockErie Music Awards to take you a ton of time either.

The only thing I ask is that you give me photos for the individuals as well. It would just make it easier to show on the big screens in the individual categories. If you want to, you can include all your band/individual stuff for the physical press kits in one big package.

If you're not attached to a band and you're applying as an individual then you do need a RockErie page and of course you'd need to submit your own package.

As far as the RockErie pages, use them as much as possible. Put as much on them as possible. I can only help you if you help me! The more that is on there, the more I have to promote.

Plus, don't forget, a lot of people might be seeing you for the first time on RockErie.com. A lot of you have MySpace and think its enough but it's not.

MySpace is great (I have a page for RockErie at www.myspace.com/rockerie) but people actually have to know about you on there or they have to trip over you.

In a lot of ways RockErie is the same because they do have to know about you or trip over you BUT RockErie is devoted fully to our LOCAL scene so it's a lot easier for people to find you.

If you're not maximizing RockErie like you maximize MySpace, its a mistake.

3. 200 dpi .jpg?

In english this means that I need a photo that's large enough to not look grainy in the newspaper or on the big screens. We found out that a photo that has 200 "dots per inch" in a .jpg format is the minimum we need to make sure the photos don't look like crap when blown up. Places like Kinko's can help you convert your photos or software programs like Adobe Photoshop can accomplish it. If you really can't do it, give me a physical photo and our designers will scan it but we really prefer it on disk.

I hope this answers your questions and helps you out.

Remember, call me at 814-878-1969 or email info@rockerie.com if you need clarification!

Getting There (Sort Of)

I'm encouraged by the people that have jumped on board and disappointed by those that haven't yet. It's our scene and only we can make it better.

1. www.rockerie.com/calendar is getting there but I'm not seeing every show that I could on there. I'd love to promote www.rockerie.com/calendar as THE place to check for shows but I really can't. It's filling up ok but we all could do better. My pledge to you is use it and I'll promote the crap out of it. But right now, its not quite ready for primetime

2. FREE flyers. I was surprised that only 6 artists took me up on my offer of free flyers. There is no catch to this. What we do is set up a re-direct to your RockErie page (for example: www.rockerie.com/hectic) and then give you flyers that promote your RockErie page to hand out at your shows. Since it's free to create and maintain your RockErie page and add shows, videos, songs, band information, etc, its really free marketing for you to better reach your fans.

Anyway, if you have questions please hit me up at info@rockerie.com

We can make the scene better if we all pull together!

Thanks

RockErie Wants To Help Artists!!!!!

Hey all, just a few housekeeping items for bands/artists.

1. I'm happy to promote your shows/special events in the newspaper and on RockErie.com. Just please abide by these simple rules. Please realize that RockErie.com is only about 20% of what my job is at the Times so the more help and notice I can get, the better.

     A. Just give me as much time as you can. If you know a show is coming
up at the end of November, get me the details now. The more time
I have, the better as far as fitting it in the workflow. I generally like
about 2 weeks lead time but I understand sometimes things happen
           at the last minute

      B. Make sure to write an email to me on myspace or info@rockerie.com
and give me enough details so I don't have any questions about what
you're trying to promote. Tell me who's on the show with you, if there's
a cover, what day/time it is, if there are links or art you want me to
promote and if its something like a contest where you're in a national
competition and you want people to vote for you, give me all the details
I need to promote that for you as well

I want to promote whatever you want but I'm only as good as the quality of information you give me as well as getting enough time to do it properly.

2. Did you know that were now featuring a band event calendar on the upper left of RockErie.com now? All you have to do is post an event from the back end of your RockErie.com page and it will show up on the calendar. If I can get enough bands/artists to use this service then I'll really promote the crap out of it in the newspaper and on RockErie.com. We need a centralized calendar where everyone can see what's going on and the only way we can get this done is to have all the RockErie bands/artists use it.

Questions? Comments?
